Arthur William Rawlins was born on March 22nd 1857, in Alderbury, Wiltshire, England. His father was Silas Arthur RAWLINS, who was born on November 2th 1834, in Downton, Wiltshire, England. His mother was Mary MUSSELL, who was born sometime before July 14th 1833, in Downton, Wiltshire, England.

He had 5 siblings: George EdwardMarkHarriet SarahDaniel and Robert Alvah Eustace.

His wife Rosa Ellen GAMBLING was born on January 11th 1858, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. They were married on January 5th 1881, in Alderbury, England, Wiltshire, England, United Kingdom, and they had 13 children: James Arthur NotleyHarriet MaryGeorge Edward WilliamEdith Lydia EllenAlice AnnieAlbert Victor GordonAlvah Daniel EustaceNellie EvelynSilas Sydney MarkRosa Ella (Rosie)Ethel WinifredStillborn Twins and Kate Hilda Caroline.

It would appear that there was a family farm as he is described as Farmer of 180 Acres and employed 2 Labourers & 2 Boys. Later described as Farmer & Dairyman, then Farmers Labourer and sometime later still as Agricultural Carter and later Drain Layer, then Bailiff and lastly Butcher.

The family story goes that originally, he had his own land which he farmed, probably handed down from his father. He was a drinker and a gambling man so lost money and when fired from his job, he moved onto other farms. He is recorded as having retired ‘incapacitated’ in 1939 and died in 1940 at the age of 83, in Andover, Hampshire.

The family moved around a lot and the children are registered in different locations. They also attended different schools. At that time, girls were not considered for much schooling, my gran (Winifred) and her younger sister Katie went to school only part of the week each.

This is said to be Arthur at ‘Helen’s’ wedding with Frank Jennings to he left.
