Anna Margaretha Whitlock (née Boelens) was born on May 23, 1862, in Groningen Netherlands. Her father Otto Cornelis Boelens (b. 20.01.1819) was also born there. Her mother Klaassien van Tongeren was born on January 17 1818, in Groningen Netherlands.

She had 5 siblings: AnnaJanna (Jenny)Otto CornelisTeunis () and Lambertus Bernardus (Bertus).

We do not know her exact date of emigration to England, but believed she must have been resident in London in 1881 as her first child Thomas was born 20th June 1882. Her father Otto and sister Janna (married name Okken) may have all travelled together. Both her sisters were accomplished seamstresses. Janna was said to have been a court dressmaker in the Netherlands, she was a widow with no living children. Her sister Anna Crombet had a hosiery company.

Her partner (who was married to her sister Anna) was Pieter Joseph Crombet, who was born on February 19 1839, in Den Hague Netherlands, and they had 4 son. together: Thomas PeterOtto CornelisJohn Marcus and Peter Joseph.   All her sons had the third Christian name of Crombet as a way of acknowledging their father, who they grew up believing to be their guardian. He registered them at school, was wealthy and sent his sons Otto and Peter (our grandfather) off to France when they were around 11yrs old to be stable boys at ‘Maisons-Laffitte’ as they were getting into trouble. The boys didn’t stay there for long and travelled throughout Europe.

She lived in 1891, in 41 Villiers RD, Willesden, Middlesex, England as recorded on the British census then moved to Brighton.

She Married 11th September 1895 in Brighton to Christopher Edwin Alexander Whitlock (with her sister Anna as witness) in Brighton, Sussex, England. He was born in 1873 so was 11yrs younger than her; they had 2 children: Lambert  who died in childhood and Ellenore.

In 1901 she lived at 104 Clarendon Road, Hove – the census has her, her husband, three children (Ellenore, Lambertus and my grandfather Peter Joseph then aged 10yrs), her sister Janna, who was a dressmaker as well as two ‘boarders’ that were listed as painters and decorators – they probably worked with or for her husband.

She lived in the City of Brighton and Hove, England, for many years. Her husband Christoper was apparently a bit of a ‘ladies man’; he left her for another woman. He was said to be of Irish stock and my grand father rather liked him as he was an exciting storyteller (not good husband material). He is listed as a ‘commercial traveller’ and ‘scholar’. Anna Margaretha said she had the last laugh as he passed away before her. She only found out about this through his lady friend who applied for a widow’s pension, which, ironically, Anna Margaretha ended up getting because she was still married to him!

The family story is that she died through having stood on a drawing pin or upholstery tack, the wound became infected and the infection turned to Gangrene leading to her death. She passed away at her daughter Ellenore’s home in Paddington, London, on November 15th 1931, at the age of 69. She was buried in Brighton and Hove cemetery in Sussex, England.
